One comes to mind for me which is my absolute favourite, T.C. Boyle's Outside Looking In, which characterises and novelises Timothy Leary's first dabbles in LSD experimentation via his growing participation focus group. You learn a lot about the precursing time and attitudes to psychedelics, having not become mainstream, and there's even a prologue dedicated to Albert Hofmann's famous bicycle ride, which was right at the very beginning of LSD's synthesis.
His students take part in the process of the trips, and we see it all through a young involved couple's eyes.

So, biographical fiction, what are your top novels that are based upon real events and history featuring characters from that history?
